Firmware update Step 2 Restore your iPhone to its original settings if you have installed any unauthorized software, such as independently designed games or applications, to your iPhone. If you have used hacking methods to jailbreak your iPhone, the firmware upgrade may not install properly. Therefore it is extremely important to completely restore your iPhone by plugging it in your computer, launching iTunes and clicking on “Restore” in the main menu, which will automatically reset your iPhone to its default settings and wipe its memory clean.

Firmware update Step 3 Connect your iPhone to your computer if you have not already done so and allow iTunes to launch. iTunes will notify you that there is a firmware update available. A pop-up message will appear as soon as the program recognizes your iPhone and will ask whether you would like to install the upgrade. It is best to upgrade firmware immediately, but if you prefer to wait until a later time you can click on “Don’t Install” and iTunes will automatically give you the option again the next time you connect your iPhone to your computer.

Firmware update Step 4 Allow iTunes to install the firmware update, refraining from using any other programs on your computer until the process is complete. Do not attempt to use your iPhone during this process either. You will not be able to receive any calls or messages during the firmware update.

Firmware update Step 5 Unplug your iPhone from the computer when the installation process has finished and iTunes notifies you that is safe to disconnect. Confirm that your iPhone’s firmware has been successfully upgraded by turning on your iPhone and tapping on the “Settings” icon on the home screen.
