Microsoft Security Essentials is a Microsoft’s free standalone antivirus software. It provides protection against viruses, spyware, rootkits, and Trojans Microsoft Operating systems like Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7.  Microsoft replaces Windows Live OneCare  and Windows Defender, which only protects users from adware and spyware.

MSE is available as standalone for all environment like 32-bit and 64-bit downloads for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.  Installation is very easy.  using it is even easier than one might expect. Updates and upgrades are automatic, so there’s no need to worry about having the latest protection. Updates are published 3 times a day to Microsoft Update. Using default settings, archived files are decompressed, and then scanned. File downloads and e-mail attachments are also scanned. Its has better scanning ability of malicious files,suspicious behavior of application etc.

When comparison between Microsoft Security Essentials vs Norton, many users have different opinions. MSE malware protection abilities as good, but not the best available like other antivirus software like Norton etc. MSE is a free service and It is Microsoft product so definitely MS OS and MSE is good combination to use.

When Microsoft Security Essentials was released, Symantec published a study called “Norton Antivirus 2009 Versus Microsoft Security Essentials: a Comparative Anti-Malware Test. It is While Symantec sponsor test, the company contracted the third party company called Dennis Technology Lab to run the tests. The study claims that each antivirus software product was installed on computers and exposed to all sorts of malware that average users could encounter in real life.

The MSE vs Norton study tested both applications for accuracy and protection. In both circumstances, Norton performed significantly better than Microsoft Security Essentials. Other reputable independent labs also find that Norton is the better product for optimal malware security. The question that then remains is whether or not an antivirus program as apt as Norton is really necessary.
