Does the world really need another smart phone platform? Samsung hopes to blind our skepticism with the Wave, the first device based on its open bada OS. Just announced at Mobile World Congress, this handset boasts a dazzling 3.3-inch touchscreen powered by Super AMOLED technology and TouchWiz 3.0, the latest version of Samsungs custom user interface. An analyst research note Tuesday shed more light on what makes Apple’s iPhone 4 tick, noting that the recently released Samsung Wave S8500 smartphone uses the same central processing unit, or CPU, as the iPhone 4.

The AMOLED tech behind the 3.3-inch (800 x 480) display promises to provide a brighter and crisper picture with less reflections than current phone displays. So it should serve as a gorgeous canvas for Samsungs new TouchWiz 3.0 interface. This UI improves on previous versions by adding customizable menus and home screens. So, one could make the music player easily accessible from the home screen. Or, taking a cue, perhaps, from MOTOBLUR, users also have the option of making their social networking tools Twitter, Facebook, IM easily accessible from the home screen. Users can customize their home screen to set one-touch access to social networking sites of their choice or turn the home screen into a media player.

A host of useful apps and features are available on the Samsung Wave. Many modern handsets are boasting Google maps as a navigational tool, but rather than use this system Samsung have developed their own system which relies on its own location based services. A satellite navigation facility is also available, however this does attract a monthly fee. YouTube comes pre installed as an application, and thanks to the great connectivity works extremely well. A Radio app takes advantage of the handsets tuner, enabling you to not only listen to your favorite stations but also make recording from them as well. The Samsung Wave operates on Samsungs new Bada OS with the user interface being the very well received TouchWiz. The wide array of apps and functions load very quickly thanks to the hefty 1ghz processor, and switching between options is almost instant. A 3.5mm headphone jack has been fitted on the Wave, enabling the user to use a choice of headphones with the phone, and coupled with the potential for up to 32GB of memory, the handset will perform superbly as a portable audio player. Bluetooth is also supported, allowing for wireless communication with compatible products. On a larger scale the connectivity options are also impressive with EDGE, GPRS and 3G all supported as well as WiFi.

Cellular networks are connected to via class 10 versions of both GPRS and EDGE in areas with little or no 3G coverage. HSDPA provides a 3G internet connection at speeds of up to 7.2 mega bytes per second (alongside HSUPA at 2 mega bytes per second). Wi-Fi connectivity can be used for gaining a much faster internet connection in various hotspots located around the country, therefore providing an enhanced web browsing experience.

The spacious internal phonebook includes the popular photocall feature whereby a photo can be assigned to each contact. Internal memory is 2GB/8GB as standard; however the inclusion of a micro SD slot means users have the option to install a memory card of up to 32 GB. This should prove more than adequate for the needs of most users, as a memory card of this size can store most peoples entire digital music collection.

The Samsung Wave is one of those handsets that everybody seems to look forward too, thanks to great screen, lovely looks and generally a great all round performance.

There is no doubt that the Samsung Wave is a stylish phone, and this alone is sure to attract many fans, however the spec list shows that the Wave has both style and substance.
